The Strictly Twitter Hash Tag Hunter is a windows application that is perfect for SEO and Social Media analysts or people with a new Twitter account who don't know which #HashTags and @Accounts they should be following to make a social media impact.
The application is a very simple to use personal scanner that sits on your own Windows computer and hooks into Twitters Search API. It runs a scan based on a number of search terms and keywords that you enter and returns a list of relevant Hash Tags and Twitter Accounts that are related to the search terms and keywords you enter.
Screen 1 - Search Terms
Screen 1 shows how you enter one or more search terms that you want to find information for. These terms can be anything but if you are looking to utilise this tool with my Strictly TweetBot Wordpress Plugin then you should be looking to find the #HashTags and @Accounts to follow on Twitter related to the key terms your website is based on.
In this example you can see I am searching for terms related to Horse Racing and the website fromthestables.com.
Enter each keyword or search term on it's own line.
The scanner is a multi-threaded application that gives you constant updates about it's progress and will inform you constantly during the scan about the number of Hash Tags and Accounts it has found already.
Version 1.0.2 has a progress bar that keeps you informed of the status of the application as well as telling you how many accounts and tags it has found. It also reports on any Twitter API errors.
For each search term and keyword it will scan the Twitter API for those words looking for the most popular hash tags that are related to those terms. It will also find a number of Twitter accounts that make the most use of these keywords before ordering the #HashTags and @Accounts by their popularity so that you know which tags and accounts to follow.

Once the scan has completed you will be able to view the results on the other tabs. Screen 2 shows the most popular hash tags the application managed to find for the search terms that were entered and these are ordered by their popularity.
As you can see the results mainly show Hash Tags related to Horse Racing but if other hash tags were used in the Tweets by people using the search terms they might also appear in the results.
Version 1.0.2 allows you to click on the Hash Tag URL and be taken to the relevant Twitter page in your default browser.

Screen 3 - Twitter Accounts
The last tab shows the list of Twitter Accounts related to your search terms that were found by the scan.
Obviously these will change over time as new Twitter accounts come onboard but if the search terms are generic enough then they won't that change much. The results page also orders these accounts by their popularity. It does this by using the follower count of each Twitter account which is the best way of determining a popular user account.
As you can see from the screenshot the top accounts are all Horse Racing related and alongside each account is the URL which will enable you to find that account online.

Screen 4 - Opening Results in Twitter
Once the Twitter Scan has completed and you have looked at the results you can simply click on the Account or Twitter Link column value to open up the desired @account or #hashtag URL in your default browser.
Screen 5 - Following an Account
Once you have clicked on an account or hashtag url that you want to examine futher the URL you selected will open up in your web browser on the http://twitter.com page and you can view the full profile information related to that account.
If you are already logged into Twitter at the time then it's just a simple matter of clicking the "Follow" button in the top right of the screen and your own Twitter account will now be following the account you just opened.
Updates - Version 1.0.2
This standalone executable Windows application is a tool I am hoping to expand over the years and already I have had great feedback from users who have found it very useful for their SEO Social Media Marketing campaigns as well as new site owners who have trouble in deciding who to follow when they first start linking their site to Twitter.
The latest version includes the following features:
- Progress bar to keep you informed of the applications progress in scanning.
- More detailed error reporting including handling the fail whale e.g 503 service unavailable error.
- Clickable URL's that open the relevant Twitter account or Hash Tag search in your browser.
- New code to always return an accounts follower numbers even if Twitter tries to block the application.
Future releases will include:
- The ability to add proxy server details to prevent blocking by Twitter.
- The ability to change the number of results returned for each search term from the current default of 100.
- The ability to add a wait interval inbetween scans to prevent API blocking by Twitter.
